At first I didn’t really love the new companion thing, however with time we are getting along really well. We do things a little differently than I do. He likes to get in and invite people to be baptized without teaching anything. I however like to teach the restoration quickly then invite them to be baptized. He says that we can find the Chosen people quicker as president directed us to do. However, I don’t feel it gives them the chance to understand why it is important. I talked to him about it and we are going with the spirit and what not on how we should start. With that we have seen a lot of success. We are opening up the area. We pretty much had nothing to start with. Fun right? Not really? I have never knocked so many doors in my life, and I don’t want to knock another door. BUT I will. I have to. Anyway, we have had a lot of success we had an investigator at church, Jesus. He really liked it I think. He brought his 2 daughters (not baptismal ageL) he has a daughter who is baptismal age but she was going somewhere. Next week she is going to come and the “wife” is going to come too. The wife, I don’t remember her name, really doesn’t want to change her life. She knows that she will have to stop drinking and she doesn’t want to stop. Maybe she will have a change of heart when she comes to church. That seems to do the trick.
We met a couple named Gorge and Susan. Susan has cancer and is in bad shape. They are going to try and make it to church next week. We need to find a member who can help them to the building. Gorge is ready to continue learning and progressing for baptism and what not. Is wife however is Christian they are more stubborn then the Catholics some times. Hopefully, we can teach and share why it is important and maybe things will change. Maybe one Sunday in the church will do the trick with her too.
Yesterday we had Ana Maria come to church. She is the mom of the 2 kids who are going to be baptized on the 27th. She doesn’t live in my area but I was the one who started to teach them with the member, my first lesson solo. She came up to me and asked why I hadn’t come over. I told her what happened and that I have a certain area to cover. She told me to just come over with Elder Pedraza, I laughed and said I’ll see what I can do. We are going to do exchanges in the ward so I can visit them. I think that it will help her progress seeing different missionaries and hopefully she will want to get baptized with her kids.
Last week we found glory, knocking doors haha. She invited us in pretty quick and we got to talking and she told us that she had listened to the missionaries before. She had many family members who are members but inactive. We taught the plan of salvation, and talked about baptism a lot. After we invited her to be baptized, she accepted. She said that she isn’t sure still but we set the date and told her if she doesn’t feel ready she doesn’t have to do it. She has a lot of questions and isn’t afraid to ask them. Surprisingly people are scared to ask questions. I don’t know why. Anyway, she doesn’t have a problem with this so she asks and we answer. We have answered stuff about fasting, tithing, temples, and many other things. She knows quite a bit from her family and people who like to “anti” the church. We will see where she goes.
Yesterday, we were with the ward mission leader. I love him to death he really wants to help but we always lose time when we work with him. He took us to a referrals home. The husband has cancer. (I have been surprised about the many people we are finding with cancer but I was reading my patriarchal blessing and talks about those that are sick that I will help them and bless them. So who knows who else I will find who is sick.) Anyway, we were teaching him the plan of salvation with his wife. We invited them to be baptized. As always the ward mission leader interrupts in the middle of silence, which isn’t always bad, and starts saying stuff. I don’t remember what he said I was too angry, and when I’m angry I can’t translate Spanish very well. Anyway, after we were riding in his truck and he was talking to us about how people aren’t ready to change like that. He started telling us how to do our missionary job. It really bothered me. He has caused a lot of problems in our lessons. He wants to help but doesn’t quite know what our instructions are from President Clark. He has asked us to set the date the first lesson, unless directed by the spirit of course. We set the date the first time to understand doubts questions and to see if they are really ready to change. It is amazing how much one little question can say so many things about somebody. I wanted to gently chew the ward mission leader out but my companion wouldn’t let me. It was probably better that way right.
As my letter is titled it is hot here. I tell members that it is really hot and they laugh. They tell me to just wait. It is only going to get worse. It is going to be 110 or 115 here in about 2 or 3 months. If I am still here I am going to melt. I have started carrying a water bottle around, but it isn’t big enough I drink it in 3 minutes or so in the morning. I am still a fish.
Anyway I love you all lots and lots. I hope that all is well. I pray for all of you. The church is true. It truly blesses people. I have seen it and I have felt it. I have realized all the blessings in my life from being out here. Especially my family, my whole family is truly a blessing. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, mom, dad, brothers, sisters, cousins and even my close friends, are a true blessing in my life. I know I am who I am from the love from my family and friends. Thank you all ever so much for the influence you have been in my life. I pray for you all. The church is true. I know it. Love you all.
Love,
Elder Paskett
